Saint Philomena lived during the early days of the Church in the 3rd century. Even as a child, she possessed a deep faith and unwavering devotion to God. She was born to a noble family in Greece, but her true nobility lay in her love for Jesus Christ.
Emperor Diocletian, who persecuted Christians at the time, tried to force her to renounce her faith and marry him, but Saint Philomena remained strong. Her refusal to worship false gods led to her enduring great suffering. She endured various forms of torture and cruelty, including scourging and attempted drownings. Each time, angels healed her and remained with her.
Diocletian, frustrated by her unwavering commitment to her beliefs, ordered Saint Philomena to be executed by decapitation, a common method used during that time to execute criminals and those deemed enemies of the state.
But here's where things get even more amazing: Saint Philomena didn't fade into history after her death. Saint Philomena's relics were discovered in the 19th century, and taken to a small church in Mugnano, Italy. Since then, remarkable miracles have been attributed to her intercession. Countless people have flocked to her shrine, seeking her help in times of need. She became known as the "Wonder Worker"!
These earrings feature the lily on one side and a palm on the other, both symbols of martyrdom in the Church.
Earrings measure .75 inches without hook.
