On July 18, 1830, Our Lady appeared to a young novice named Catherine Labouré at the motherhouse of the Daughters of Charity in Paris, France. Mary appeared in radiant light, seated on a chair, and spoke to Catherine with great tenderness, predicting future trials and sorrows. On November 27, 1830, Mary appeared again, standing on a globe with rays of light streaming from her hands. She requested the creation of a medal bearing her image and the inscription, "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." This medal, known as the Miraculous Medal, was to be worn by the faithful as a sign of her protection and grace. Our Lady promised great blessings to those who wore it with faith and trust in her intercession.
