In December 1531, Our Lady appeared to a humble Aztec convert named Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City. Mary appeared as a beautiful young Aztec princess clothed in a robe of stars and spoke to Juan Diego in his native Nahuatl language. She asked him to request that a church be built on the site of her appearance. When Juan Diego faced skepticism from the local bishop, Mary provided a miraculous sign: her image imprinted on his tilma and a blooming of roses in the middle of winter. During one of her apparitions, she comforted Juan Diego with the tender words, "Am I not here, who am your mother?"
