Beginning May 13, 1917, the apparition of Our Lady appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal. Lucia was 9 years old, and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta, were 8 and 6 years old. When she appeared, Mary wore a white veil trimmed in gold. She told the children that she came from Heaven, and she asked them to say the Rosary every day and devote themselves to the Holy Trinity. Specifically, she asked the children to pray the rosary for an end to World War I and the conversion of Russia.
