The story of Our Lady of the Snows traces back to a miraculous event in Rome during the fourth century.
Legend holds that a wealthy Roman couple, desiring to dedicate their wealth to the Mother of God, prayed for guidance. In response, the Virgin Mary appeared to them and Pope Liberius in a dream, instructing them to build a church on a site she would mark. On August 5th, despite the summer season, snow miraculously fell on the Esquiline Hill. Taking this as the sign, the Basilica of St. Mary Major was constructed on that very spot, becoming one of the oldest and most significant Marian churches in Rome.
Our Lady of the Snows is celebrated each year on August 5th, commemorating the miracle of snow and the dedication of the basilica. This title of Mary reminds the faithful of her intercession and the ways she guides her children. This is a reproduction print of an original watercolor of Our Lady of the Snows.
